Distributors are taking aim at shifting winds in a challenging business environment.

For industrial distributors, surpassing 2020 sales figures was like hitting a slow, low softball. After the pandemic fractured the economy, industrial companies supplying critical materials worked hard to reach their customers—but they did so in the face of challenges like shutdowns, shortages, and fears about what the future would bring. Last year, we saw many businesses barely make it onto this list, and sales figures fell by 20% to 30% compared to the previous year.
That’s why putting together this year’s Big 50 was a particularly interesting and exciting exercise. Distributors took aim and found themselves back on the list, despite a set of challenges that in other years might have been considered a major hardship. But perspectives have shifted, and businesses seem grateful for the opportunity to keep their doors open—and for the chance to offer customers the improvements they’re known for.
