Although office furniture may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about an office, no office is truly complete without desks, chairs, and water coolers. While office furniture may seem to have changed very little over the last twenty years, the market has actually experienced major innovation and growth. For example, standing desks are perfect for office workers who prefer not to sit all day for health or comfort reasons. Ergonomic chairs and desks are also excellent for helping many office workers manage back and wrist pain. More recently, the coronavirus pandemic forced many Americans to work from home, which led to a major increase in home office furniture sales in 2020.

 

The United States is home to the world’s largest office furniture market, generating more than $15.4 billion in revenue in 2019. The U.S. office furniture market was projected to reach a value of $14.3 billion by 2025. Some of the leading office furniture companies in the world are U.S.-based, including Steelcase, Herman Miller, and Haworth. Steelcase generates a large share of its revenue from systems and storage products such as filing cabinets and desks, while Herman Miller’s sales are driven by seating products. The value of furniture imports into the United States was $58 billion in 2018, making the country the world’s leading furniture importer. A large portion of the value of office furniture imports comes from wooden furniture rather than metal furniture. In 2019, the United States exported approximately $158 million worth of wooden furnitures and $214 million worth of metal furniture.
